Marais-Rue St Gilles

This exceptional and rare private mansion was owned and built for the Marquis de Vaux in the eighteenth century. Just to get a synopsis of the grandeur of the building, one should go through the booklet that's left on the coffee table recounting (in French though!) the history of this amazing and famous place.

The French writer Mr. Alphonse Daudet was married to the owner's daughter and spent time in the mansion. Some well-known French socialites and sportspeople (no names please!) also resided there.

The actual owner of Rue St Gilles apartment has lived there for over thirty years.

The Apartment

The look of Rue St Gilles tells you that the owner is involved in decoration and design.

After entering the immense private courtyard one climbs a single flight of stairs to enter the apartment. Sorry, but French building laws do not allow for the installation of a lift in this kind of building!

One enters the large living room where to the left there are steps taking you to the mezzanine which doubles as an extra bedroom when needed and the office that overlooks the very classy dining room.

Straight ahead in the living room one enters the well equipped kitchen where to the left is the dining room and to the right through the corridor one discovers the bathroom equipped with a sink, bath, shower and a toilet. Then there's a set of steps taking you to the kid's room and further on one discovers the very large bedroom with a king size bed.

The apartment is equipped with a TV with English channels, high-speed internet, DVD, CD player, telephone for incoming and local calls.

The District

The apartment is located in the third district just a short walk from the heart of the Marais.

The Marais is one of the oldest and most historic areas in Paris. A place of aristocratic residence in the seventeenth century, it was abandoned during the Revolution and became an architectural wasteland. The Marais was not touched by Baron Haussmann during his work in the 1830's to make Paris the most modern city in nineteenth century Europe. As a result the Marais retains its pre-nineteenth century splendour. In 1962 it was declared an historic are and restoration began in earnest. The area is now once again fashionable with many galleries and restaurants, fashion boutiques and cultural centres. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity.

Nearby are the Pompidou/Beaubourg Museum, the Picasso Museum, the Louvre Museum and the Place des Vosges.

Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est train stations are both nearby. Orly and Charles de Gaulle Airports are easily reachable by taxi or a private limousine services. Our suggestion would be for you to spend a day or two in Deauville in the Normandy region. Train schedules are plentiful or alternatively it’s less than two hours drive.

The nearest subway stops are Chemin Vert and Saint-Sébastien - Froissart . Taxis can be called for a pick-up on your doorstep.
