La Petite Maison

Welcome to La Petite Maison in the beautiful Languedoc region of Southern France known as Minervois. This family home is a perfect place to get away for a relaxing holiday or longer stay in one of the most beautiful and tranquil areas of Europe.

La Petite Maison stands roughly in the centre of the former medieval castle complex that once was much larger and was used to protect the inhabitants of this peaceful southern French village from any attacks by knights from the neighbouring regions.

The House

Built around the late 1800's, La Petite Maison was originally occupied by a vineyard workman and his family. It was completely renovated from top to bottom with the idea of retaining a local feeling.

The property is accessed through a gate making it a safe and private spot. There’s a charming patio/terrace where one can enjoy peaceful afternoon naps on a hammock under the tree, & great dinners al fresco.

The 3 bedrooms & 1 bathroom can accommodate 5 + guests comfortably.

The owners have placed a great emphasis on the furniture around the house as well as a fully equipped kitchen as cooking is a fundamental national passtime here in France.

After crossing the patio one enters directly into the living/dining room. A separate door enters the kitchen from the patio as well.

The living room has a large table that can accommodate up to 6 guests, many comfortable armchairs, a cupboard filled with enough dishware, silverware and glasses to accommodate your group.

On that level & next door there is a separated pantry where a fireplace can be used as a BBQ.

Also on that level there’s a private garage with another toilet & shower stall.

Going upstairs from the living room, one discovers the 3 bedroom.

Aside from a wide bathroom with a bath & a shower there’s also an office upstairs for your use.

The Region

The nearby villages are free of tourists, even though it is within a short distance of many points of interest.

The village is located in the Minervois, a part of the Languedoc Roussillon region. This part of France is known for its wines, which are constantly improving in quality. One of the latest wine labels is called La Livignière, which is well appreciated by Robert Parker, the renowned US wine expert.

The area is often compared to Tuscany, in Italy, because of the similarities in the regions' agro-tourism resources. Both are known for their olive groves, olive oils, a wide range of culinary treasures, vegetables, fruits, cheeses (mostly goat's cheese), and of course their wines.

The Languedoc region is full of history. The village of Minerve (7 km from the house) was a strategic location for the medieval Cathar sect and an important stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostelle in Spain during medieval times. It was also the home of Simon de Montfort, the medieval nobleman who crushed the Cathars. Another key site of the middle ages, the abbey at Fontfroide is 25 km away and well worth a visit.

Don't miss the chance to see the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, a World Heritage site, which has a wonderful covered market and an eighteen-hole golf course. The town of Pezenas is where the playwright Molière used to spend his summers away from Paris. His plays are performed there on a regular basis. Pezenas has plenty to see and do, with great museums, art and antiques galleries, crafts, and a variety of shops.

Further away are the Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard and the ancient cities of Arles and Nîmes, both of which have arenas dating back to the Roman era.

Narbonne hosts a beautiful covered market, which is open every day from 7:00am till 1:00pm. Many important wine caves are scattered all around the region, and sampling is encouraged. On the way to Béziers, stop in Bizes (20 km), a small village that has the only olive cellar in the area, where one can buy different types of olive oil, olives, numerous types of jams, crafts, soaps, and much more.

Every Sunday morning there's an excellent market in the village of Ferrals les Montagnes, up in the mountains (15 km) where one can find lots of different types of food including bread, fish, meats, cheeses, jams, and much more.

And of course, the Mediterranean is just a short drive away.
