Martel

This beautiful home can accommodate up to six guests. Martel is located in the Dordogne region in an area that is rich with history.

The village of Martel is known as the village of seven towers. Walking through the streets one sees and feels the rich past, from coblestoned streets to magnificent old Hotels Particuliers (Private houses).

During the middle ages and until 1790 the region was ruled by a King's representative.

During this time it became the jurisdiction capital of Turenne's Viscount. The Hotel de la Raymondie was built around 1290 by Bernard Raymondi who was the son of Raymond IV Viscount of Turenne. Henri Court Mantel, second son of Henri II Plantagenet, came to Martel to hide after the revolt he began against his father and the pillaging of Rocamadour.

Protected by its ramparts the village was, after the treaty of Bretigny occupied by the English from 1360 to 1374. Martel was returned to the French crown under King Louis XV in 1738.

On the grand plaza the magnificent eighteenth century hall surrounded by medieval facades can still be admired today. Close to Martel is the village of Gluges where one can visit the twelfth century semi-troglodyte Romanesque Church.

The House

You enter the property through a small courtyard and after climbing a few steps you reach a small outdoor landing where a table welcomes you for meals and reading. Entering the home you’ll find the double living room to your left, and the open kitchen to your right. Directly across there’s a table ready for meals in case it’s a bad day outside! Also on your right you’ll find the spacious and well lit bathroom.

Going through the double living room, separated in its middle by a winding staircase and to your left, you’ll find the main bedroom. Upstairs and accessed via the winding staircase are two separate, double bedrooms.

The house is nested in an old part of Martel and with its main façade facing south the house receives an abundance of sunlight all day long. As you’ll discover, the owner has a real gift for interior decorating.
